Kalitta Motorsports to Run Special Lung Cancer Awareness Decals at NHRA Finals in Pomona

POMONA, Calif., (Nov. 6, 2013) – The four-car, nitro-racing contingent of Kalitta Motorsports will be running special decals this weekend at the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series’ season-ending NHRA Auto Club Finals in Pomona, Calif. to honor November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The decals will adorn the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster driven by Doug Kalitta, the Optima Batteries Top Fuel dragster driven by David Grubnic, the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car driven by California native and resident Del Worsham, and the Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car driven by Alexis DeJoria.

Kalitta Motorsports has been affected deeply by lung cancer in recent years including the losses of Doug Kalitta, Sr. and Wendy Kalitta, respectively the father and sister of NHRA Top Fuel veteran Doug Kalitta. Most recently the Ypsilanti, Michigan-based racing team suffered the loss of Tammy Oberhofer, who served as the team’s office manager and was also the wife of Kalitta Motorsports Vice President of Operations Jim Oberhofer, who is also crew chief for Kalitta. Tammy is also survived by her daughter Ashley Oberhofer, the team’s Social Media Coordinator.

“Both my family and our Kalitta Motorsports family have been severely impacted by lung cancer,” Jim said. “We lost my brother-in-law Mace Maben a couple of years ago as well so anything we can do to help raise awareness for America’s leading cancer killer is what we are going to do as best we possibly can.”

Lung Cancer Awareness Month is symbolized by a light grey, pearl or clear ribbon. An estimated 159,480 people will die from lung cancer in 2013. Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.
