INDIANAPOLIS, (Aug. 31, 2014) – Kalitta Motorsports, the nitro-fueled, four-car NHRA drag racing team based in Ypsilanti, Mich., has completed qualifying for Monday’s eliminations of the most prestigious drag racing event on Earth, the 60th annual U.S. Nationals, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
By qualifying for tomorrow’s eliminations (No. 15), J.R. Todd, driver of the Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts Top Fuel dragster, clinched a berth in NHRA’s “playoffs”, the Countdown to the Championship, which begins at the next event in Charlotte and includes the final six events of the season. Both Mello Yello Top Fuel championship points leader Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, and Alexis DeJoria, driver of the Patrón XO Café Toyota Camry Funny Car, had already clinched Countdown spots in their respective classes before entering the event in Indy. Only the top 10 in points at the conclusion of Indy eliminations in each class are eligible to compete in the Countdown.
Del Worsham, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car, can clinch a spot in the Funny Car Countdown in eliminations tomorrow with a wide range of scenarios. Worsham is currently in 9th place (941) in Mello Yello Funny Car championship points, 58 points ahead of 10th place and 68 points ahead of 11th place. Each elimination round win is worth 20 points.
