Two-Time Funny Car Bristol Winner Worsham Looks for First Win in DHL Colors

Del Worsham BRISTOL, Tenn., (June 11, 2013) – Del Worsham, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car for Kalitta Motorsports, knows how to race a 10,000-horsepower nitro-fueled Funny Car to the winner’s circle at Bristol Dragway – He’s done it twice. This weekend Worsham and his DHL “Yella Fellas” team will attempt to break through for their first win of the 2013 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn.

While racing for his family-owned team, Worsham took home the Funny Car “Wally” trophy in 2003 and then again in 2009 with Al-Anabi Racing. Worsham took over the controls of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car at the beginning of this season, and he and his team are looking to build on their semi-final finish momentum from the previous event in Englishtown, N.J. this weekend in “Thunder Valley”.

 â€œWe’ve had a good running car all season and we’re starting to see good results,” Worsham, a 43-year old resident of Chino Hills, Calif., said. “In NHRA drag racing, it takes more than a good car to go out and win an event. There are plenty of ways to have a better car than the other guy and still lose. We’ve had some of that bad luck this year so we’re hoping that the tables have turned in our favor for a while.”

Worsham is in ninth place in Mello Yello Funny Car championship points.

Worsham began his straight-line racing career in the fall of 1990 and has gone on to secure 33 career wins, including 25 in the Funny Car class. After switching Nitro classes and clinching the 2011 Top Fuel NHRA World Championship, the fan-favorite Worsham retired from driving and became crew chief for fellow Kalitta Motorsports teammate Alexis DeJoria. After one season out of the driver’s seat, he returned as a driver this season to take the controls of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car.

Event Schedule:

The NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals begin Friday for Team Kalitta and all the Nitro-powered pros with two qualifying sessions at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. (ET). Two more qualifying sessions follow on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The top 16 qualified cars in each Nitro class will race Sunday in final eliminations beginning at noon.
