Team Kalitta Qualifying Recap – Charlotte 2; Todd and DeJoria Qualify No. 1 as Team Kalitta Kicks Off Countdown in Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C., (Sept. 13, 2014) – Kalitta Motorsports will have two of its nitro-fueled racers begin Sunday’s eliminations of the NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C., just a few miles from Charlotte, from the No. 1 qualifying position.

J.R. Todd, driver of the Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts Top Fuel dragster, qualified No. 1 in the Top Fuel class with an outstanding 3.804-second, 317.64-mph blast down the 1,000-ft drag strip at zMAX Dragway. It marks the first time this season for Todd to start race day from the top spot. It’s his first No. 1 since 2009 and the fourth of his career.

Alexis DeJoria, driver of the Patrón XO Café Toyota Camry Funny Car, qualified No. 1 in the Funny Car class with a terrific 4.090-sec., 300.53-mph pass. It’s the second time this season and second time in her career that DeJoria will enter Sunday in the No. 1 slot.

Having a Team Kalitta racer qualify No. 1 in both Top Fuel and Funny Car classes at the same event has now only happened twice in the team’s history. The first time was in Atlanta earlier this year with Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, and DeJoria.

The event in Concord this weekend is the first of six events in NHRA’s “playoffs”, the Countdown to the Championship.
