COMMERCE, Ga., (May 19, 2014) – Doug Kalitta, driver of the 10,000-horsepower “Big Red” Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, raced to his fourth final round of the 2014 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series today during eliminations of the 34th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., a few miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
The trip to the “money” round for Kalitta and the Mac Tools team was the 72nd of his 17-year career at the wheel of a Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster. Kalitta was the No. 1 qualifier for eliminations in Atlanta after blistering both ends of the Atlanta Dragway track record, 3.732 seconds (elapsed time) and 328.86 mph (speed). Kalitta is also now closing in on a major milestone in his career – He needs only eight more elimination-round wins to reach the historic 500 round-win mark.
With his runner-up in Atlanta, Kalitta takes control of the Mello Yello Top Fuel championship points lead, seven points ahead of second place Antron Brown.
Results Recap; Eliminations Finalized on Monday as Rain Shortens Racing Sunday
Persistent rain and unstable track conditions at Atlanta Dragway Sunday forced NHRA officials to postpone the conclusion of eliminations of the 34th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals until Monday at 11:40 a.m.
After an eight-hour rain delay Sunday, Top Fuel eliminations began at approximately 7:00 p.m. After five pairs of Top Fuelers struggled mightily to acquire and maintain traction on the “green” Atlanta Dragway racing surface, including the Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts driven by J.R. Todd, NHRA officials wisely chose to suspend eliminations Sunday night with three pairs of Top Fuel dragsters remaining.

Monday E1: Kalitta defeats Karamesines – 4.470 sec., 164.55 mph to 16.419 sec., 42.07 mph
