Arend and Kalitta Race to Semifinals in Atlanta; Teammates Grubnic and DeJoria Post Early Finishes
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 6, 2012) – In NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series qualifying action at the annual running of the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., a few miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, Kalitta Motorsports’ Jeff Arend and Doug Kalitta each raced to the semifinals of their respective nitro-fueled classes capping off an excellent weekend for the team in the Peach State.
Native Canadian Arend, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car, qualified in the No. 11 (4.183 sec., 301.40 mph) position for the 16-car Funny Car field. In the opening round, he raced against No. 6 qualifier Tony Pedregon. Arend and the DHL “Yella Fellas” made a nice, clean lap to get the upset win 4.197 seconds, 302.21 mph to 4.474 sec., 209.36 mph.
Arend and the DHL team then took on Johnny Gray in round two. For the second consecutive weekend, Arend then drove his yellow and black DHL Funny Car to the semifinals by delivering a quarterfinals win, 4.188 sec., 301.33 mph to 6.209 sec., 108.25 mph.
In the Funny Car semis, Arend raced a red-hot Ron Capps, the No. 2 qualifier and runner-up finisher at the previous event in Houston. Not long after the race began, the DHL hot rod struggled with traction on the hot straight-line racing circuit ending Arend’s chances to race for a fourth career “Wally” trophy. Capps got the win, 6.201 sec., 113.28 mph to 4.164 sec., 304.05 mph.
Arend moves up to ninth place in Full Throttle Funny Car championship points.
Doug Kalitta, driver of the Kalitta Air Top Fueler, qualified his dragster in the No. 12 (3.891 sec., 300.06 mph) slot. Kalitta faced No. 5 qualifier and Full Throttle Top Fuel championship points leader Antron Brown in round one. Kalitta and the Kalitta Air “Fly Guys” pulled off the big upset win, 3.895 sec., 318.02 mph to 4.019 sec., 281.07 mph, to get their seventh all-time round win against Brown.
In the quarterfinals, Kalitta matched up with Spencer Massey. Massey acquired the points lead from Brown after Brown’s loss to Kalitta in the opener. So, for the second time on Sunday, Kalitta defeated the Top Fuel points leader when he got another upset big win over No. 4 qualifier Massey to reach his third semi-final round of the 2012 season, 3.911 sec., 315.05 mph to 4.887 sec., 153.82 mph.
Kalitta then rolled to the starting line to face his longtime rival Tony Schumacher in the semis, who by way of Massey’s loss to Kalitta became the Top Fuel points leader making it the third consecutive round that Kalitta would face the leader in Full Throttle Top Fuel points. Kalitta’s Kalitta Air dragster lost valuable traction immediately after the start of the race this time however, and that allowed Schumacher to get the win, 6.557 sec., 139.16 mph to 3.894 sec., 307.72 mph.
Kalitta moves up in the points as well, now tied for sixth place in Full Throttle Top Fuel championship points.
Native Australian David Grubnic, driver of the Optima Batteries Top Fuel dragster, qualified his hot rod in the No. 7 (3.872 seconds, 318.09 mph) spot. Grubnic took on No. 10 qualifier Bob Vandergriff in round one of eliminations. After the light went green and the race started, Grubnic charged the Optima Batteries rail into the lead and led almost the entire race down the 1,000-ft. drag strip until a cylinder unexpectedly “dropped” in the volatile nitro-fueled engine and that let Vandergriff pass “Grubby” right before the finish line stripe to get the upset win, 4.043 sec., 245.40 mph to 3.919 sec., 317.72 mph.
Grubnic is now in 11th place in Full Throttle Top Fuel points.
Rookie of the Year contender Alexis DeJoria, driver of the Tequila Patron Toyota Camry Funny Car, qualified her Kalitta Motorsports racer in the No. 10 (4.166 sec., 302.28 mph) spot for eliminations and raced No. 7 qualifier Matt Hagan in the opener. The two drivers and their machines gave the huge Atlanta Dragway crowd a great side-by-side race, but Hagan was able to get the very close win to end DeJoria’s day early, 4.274 sec., 261.47 mph to 4.225 sec., 284.27 mph.
Dejoria is now 15th in Full Throttle Funny Car points.

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 5, 2012) – In NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series qualifying action at the annual running of the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., a few miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, the nitro-fueled contingent of Kalitta Motorsports placed all four of the team’s 300+mph hot rods into Sunday’s eliminations.

Native Australian David Grubnic, driver of the Optima Batteries Top Fuel dragster, will lead the way for Team Kalitta into tomorrow’s raceday. He qualified his red and black hot rod in the No. 7 (3.872 seconds, 318.09 mph) spot for the 16-car field of Top Fuel eliminations. He will race against No. 10 qualifier Bob Vandergriff in the opening round.
Doug Kalitta, driver of the Kalitta Air Top Fueler, qualified his dragster in the No. 12 (3.891 sec., 300.06 mph) slot on the Top Fuel “ladder”. Doug will face No. 5 qualifier Antron Brown in round one.
Rookie of the Year contender Alexis DeJoria, driver of the stunning green and black Tequila Patron Toyota Camry Funny Car, qualified in the No. 10 (4.166 sec., 302.28 mph) spot for the 16-car Funny Car field of eliminations and will race No. 7 qualifier Matt Hagan in the opener.
Native Canadian Arend and the DHL “Yella Fellas” crew qualified their yellow DHL Toyota Camry racer right behind their “flopper” teammates in the No. 11 (4.183 sec., 301.40 mph) position. In the opening round, they will race against No. 6 qualifier Tony Pedregon.

Arend Delivers Semi-Final Showing for DHL in Houston; Grubnic Reaches Quarterfinals as Teammates Kalitta and DeJoria Exit Eliminations Early
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 29, 2012) – In NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series action Sunday during final eliminations of the NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas, just outside of Houston, Jeff Arend, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car, raced his yellow and black-clad racer to his first semifinal of the 2012 season.
Native Canadian Arend and the DHL “Yella Fellas” crew qualified their nitro-fueled race car in a season-best No. 4 (4.138 sec., 307.37 mph) position for “Flopper” eliminations. Arend raced No. 13 qualifier Matt Hagan in round one. Arend and Hagan gave the huge crowd of drag racing fans a great race with Arend picking up the win, 4.141 sec., 308.57 mph to 4.179 sec., 303.57 mph.
In the quarterfinals, Arend rolled to the starting line to “Go the Grand” with his opponent Tim Wilkerson. Wilkerson struggled early as his entry lost valuable grip on the racing surface and that allowed Arend to cruise to the easy win, 4.204 sec., 303.78 mph to 8.836 sec., 90.18 mph.
Arend matched up with Mike Neff in the semifinals in a rematch of last season’s final round in Houston. For the first time all weekend, the DHL car had problems with traction and that was enough to give Neff the victory, 5.772 sec., 130 mph to 4.176 sec., 306.81 mph. The trip to the semis was Arend’s first since reaching the same round at the Phoenix event in the fall of last year.
Arend moves up to 10th (252) place in Full Throttle Funny Car championship points.
Native Australian David Grubnic, driver of the Candlewood Suites Top Fuel dragster, qualified his hot rod in a season-best No. 4 (3.829 sec., 323.35 mph) slot for eliminations. In round one, he raced against No. 13 qualifier Clay Millican. After the “Christmas Tree” went green, Millican led until almost halfway down the 1,000-ft. straight-line course, but Grubnic’s dragster, helmed by crew chief and drag racing icon Connie “the Bounty Hunter” Kalitta, took the lead and charged to the finish line first to get the close win, 3.843 sec., 317.94 mph to 3.898 sec., 311.92 mph.
In round two, Grubnic faced off against Bob Vandergriff. The two wily drag racers had to earn their paychecks as they both had to negotiate a hot and slick race track. Both dragsters lost traction and smoked the tires, but Vandergriff was able to get the pedalfest win, 5.415 sec., 126.57 mph to 4.260 sec., 260.66 mph.
Grubnic moves up from 11th place to 9th (259) place in Full Throttle Top Fuel championship points.
Doug Kalitta, driver of the Technicoat Top Fueler, qualified his colorfully-decorated dragster in the No. 9 (3.855 sec., 320.81 mph) spot for eliminations. He faced Tony Schumacher, the No. 8 qualifier, in the opening round. Schumacher and Kalitta continued their rivalry in fine style with an exciting side-by-side lap, but Schumacher saw the win light come on in his lane, 3.870 sec., 319.82 mph to 3.825 sec., 320.74 mph.
Kalitta is now in 7th (313) place in Full Throttle points.
Alexis DeJoria, driver of the sleek green and black Tequila Patron Toyota Camry Funny Car, qualified her 300+mph machine in the No. 10 (4.183 sec., 303.91 mph) position for eliminations. In the opening round, she raced against fellow Rookie of the Year contender Courtney Force, marking the first time the two ladies have faced one another in eliminations. DeJoria got a slight starting line advantage (.067 sec. to .079 sec.), but Force was able to make up the deficit and get around DeJoria to get a close win, 4.202 sec., 294.31 mph to 4.126 sec., 309.98 mph.
DeJoria is now in 14th (190) place in Full Throttle points. |

Grubnic Hopes to Make Reservations in Houston Winner’s Circle with Candlewood Suites Dragster
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 25, 2012) – Native Australian David Grubnic will take the controls of the Candlewood Suites Top Fuel dragster this weekend in Baytown, Texas, just a few miles from the Houston city limits, in hopes of finishing up some 14-year-old racing business. Grubnic, affectionately known as “Grubby”, and the rest of the stars of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will be in 300+mph straight-line action at Royal Purple Raceway for the NHRA Spring Nationals.
Grubnic, who joined the nitro-fueled ranks of Kalitta Motorsports in 2004, was a runner-up finisher in his first NHRA Top Fuel final round appearance in Houston in 1998.
“We came very close to getting the trophy in Houston all those years ago,” Grubnic, a 49-year old resident of Bozeman, Mont., said. “Back then I was driving for another team (Montana Express) and we were making a pretty good lap against Cory Mac (McClenathan) in the final, but our car let go and subsequently ignited a fireball about 300 ft. before the finish line.
“It’s always exciting to get back on the race track with the Candlewood Suites dragster. Hopefully we can resolve some unfinished business this weekend with a win. Our partnership with Candlewood Suites keeps getting stronger, and we’re thrilled and honored to race for them in Houston and in the future.”
The Candlewood Suites logo will be prominently displayed on all four Kalitta Motorsports race cars throughout 2012, including major associate sponsorship on the Technicoat Top Fuel dragster driven by Doug Kalitta, the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car driven by Jeff Arend, and the Tequila Patron Toyota Camry Funny Car driven by Rookie of the Year contender Alexis DeJoria.
Candlewood Suites’ primary sponsorship on the Grubnic-driven Top Fuel dragster also includes the NHRA Dollar General Summer Nationals, Topeka, Kan. – May 18-20, and the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, Charlotte, N.C. – Sept. 14-16.
Grubnic, an 18-year Top Fuel veteran, earned his first career Top Fuel victory in Topeka, Kan. in 2005, becoming the first racer born outside North America to win an NHRA Top Fuel event. He has two wins in his career with 15 final-round appearances. Grubnic’s Candlewood Suites Top Fueler is helmed by drag racing icon and team owner Connie “the Bounty Hunter” Kalitta who serves as crew chief.
