Kalitta Motorsports News

Troy Coughlin Jr.

DALLAS (October 14, 2016) – Kalitta Motorsports is pleased to announce the expansion to a third Top Fuel dragster team driven by Troy Coughlin, Jr. beginning in the 2017 season. This announcement aligns two of the legendary names in the sport, Kalitta and Coughlin, for the first time.

“I am very excited to be competing in the Top Fuel class with Kalitta Motorsports,” said Coughlin, Jr. “Kalitta Motorsports has a lot of history and legacy in NHRA similar to my family. The first time I came to Team Kalitta I noticed the family-type atmosphere and the extreme desire to win and I knew this was the team I wanted to be involved with. I am studying hard and plan to hit the ground running and have a strong start to the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season.”

Coughlin, Jr. is the current points leader in Division 3’s Super Comp division. He previously won the 2013 Super Gas title in Division 3 and is a two-time NHRA U.S. Nationals winner. Last season, he drove in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod series and was named Rookie of the Year. In his career, the 26-year-old driver has driven Junior Dragsters, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Dragster and Pro Mod machines. Earlier this year, he earned his Top Fuel license.

Next season, Coughlin, Jr. is currently scheduled to compete in a limited schedule that may be expanded with additional funding.

Coughlin, Jr. comes from a family with a long line of NHRA success. He will be the first Coughlin to compete in the Top Fuel ranks since his grandfather, Jeg Coughlin, Sr., won races in the late '70s and '80s. His father, Troy Coughlin, Sr., is the reigning NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Champion, while his uncles, John Coughlin, Mike Coughlin and Jeg Coughlin, Jr. are all multi-time champions. John and Mike earned multiple Division 3 titles, while Jeg Coughlin, Jr. is a five-time Pro Stock champion and current Countdown for the Championship qualifier. All totaled the Coughlin family owns 111 NHRA national event wins.

He is expected to be a strong contender for the 2017 AAA Road to the Future rookie of the year trophy, which is something that his uncle, Jeg Coughlin, Jr., claimed in 1998, and three of his new teammates, Del Worsham (1991), Doug Kalitta (1998) and J.R. Todd (2006), have also earned.

“Kalitta Motorsports is thrilled to have Troy, Jr. join our team,” said Jim Oberhofer, Vice President of Operations, Kalitta Motorsports. “He has a ton of talent and a passion for racing. The Coughlin and Kalitta names have a long track record of success in NHRA drag racing and we know Troy, Jr. is just going to help continue that tradition of success for both families for years to come.”

Founded in 1959, Kalitta Motorsports will expand to a sixth entry for the first time in its history. As the only multi-car nitro team to qualify every team in the Countdown for the Championship for the past three seasons, Team Kalitta has a long history of success. Coughlin, Jr. will have an incredible set of teammates to lean on as he goes through his rookie season. Current Team Kalitta drivers Kalitta, Todd, Worsham, Alexis DeJoria and Paul Lee have nearly 100 combined victories and over 1,000 round wins.

Coughlin, Jr.’s 2017 schedule, sponsorship and crew chief will be announced at a later date.

Kalitta earns Reading round win

Race Recap: Kalitta and the DEWALT FLEXVOLT team made the most of their one qualifying pass on Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway. They earning the fourth qualifying spot with their 3.750 second pass and gained some valuable data for their first round matchup.

His draw was Ike Maier, and they were the eighth pair on track. Kalitta moved first and led all the way to the finish line to earn the round win with a 3.728 second pass. That run gave him lane choice over fellow Countdown competitior Brittany Force, but Kalitta's day ended early with a rare foul start.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 4 (3.752 sec., 325.92 mph)

E1: Kalitta defeated Maier - 3.728 sec., 328.78 mph to 4.159 sec., 288.39 mph

E2: Kalitta defeated by B. Force - Foul to 17.366 sec., 81.36 mph

Point Standings: Second (-77); trails first-place Antron Brown by 77 points, leads third-place Brittany Force by 41 points

Del Worsham

Stout qualifying effort yields a Reading round win for Worsham

Race Recap: Worsham was one of just three drivers to make it down the track in the lone qualifying session that was not cancelled due to weather this past weekend in Reading. Speeding down the track in over 325 mph, the DHL Toyota seeded third overall with his 3.904 second pass earning a bonus point for their efforts.

However, even with the solid qualifying effort, Worsham was not given a kind draw as the DHL team drew John Force in the first round for the second consecutive race weekend. This time, Worsham got the win with a wild pedaling effort to get around the legend. In the second round, Worsham drew Jack Beckman. Despite running quicker than his qualifying time, Worsham was eliminated when Beckman ran a top five all-time run.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 3 (3.904 sec., 325.77 mph)

E1: Worsham defeated J. Force - 5.020 sec., 194.24 mph to 7.836 sec., 86.56 mph

E2: Worsham defeated by Beckman - 3.907 sec., 329.83 mph to 3.850 sec., 332.26 mph

Quotable: "Great effort out of this DHL Toyota team, but it was not our day. The guys will regroup and we will be ready in a couple weeks when we return to Dallas."

Point Standings: Fifth (-122); trails with fourth-place Matt Hagan by 12 points, leads sixth place John Force by 16 points

JR Todd

Quick end to a weather-hampered Reading weekend for Todd

Race Recap: With weather hampering the Keystone Nationals for the second consecutive season, Todd and the SealMaster team were hoping for a second shot on the Maple Grove Raceway. They were just one pair from the line before rains fell harder, and Todd was forced to start from the 15th position after the team struggled in their only qualifying attempt on the weekend.

The draw was the reigning champion, Antron Brown. Despite running nearly 330 mph and a time (3.748) that would have given lane choice in round two, Todd was defeated by Brown in a close race at the finish line.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 15 (5.589 sec., 125.19 mph)

E1: Todd defeated by Brown - 3.748 sec., 329.26 mph to 3.715 sec., 327.98 mph

Quotable: "Unfortunately a quick end to our day. We have three more shots at it this season and I know the SealMaster Toyota team is gunning to pick up some more trophies before we are done."

Point Standings: Eighth (-194); trails seventh-place Leah Pritchett by five points, leads ninth-place Richie Crampton by 24 points

Alexis DeJoria

DeJoria's new colors see early defeat

Race Recap: Despite weather affecting most of the racing this weekend in Reading, DeJoria's pit was a bright spot on Friday and Saturday as the team debuted the latest pink Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry to support Breast Cancer Awareness. However, on track on Sunday, DeJoria's first round matchup with Ron Capps did not go as desired as her Funny Car shook causing the chutes to deploy.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 13 (12.151 sec., 81.44 mph)

E1: DeJoria defeated by Capps - 7.408 sec., 82.72 mph to 4.144 sec., 309.84 mph

**Note: Both of Friday's qualifying sessions and the second Saturday qualifying session were cancelled due to inclement weather.

 JR Todd

Todd rebounds in Gateway

Race Recap: After a rough start to the Countdown in Charlotte, Todd and the SealMaster team were looking to go rounds at Gateway Motorsports Park.

After just missing out on the bonus points in both the second and third qualifying sessions, Todd laid down a stellar pass in the final qualifying pass. Crew chiefs Connie Kalitta and Rob Flynn guided Todd to a 3.750 second pass that bumped Todd all the way up to the third qualified spot and two bonus points.

Todd's first opponent was Kyle Wurtzel. Wurtzel, competing in his fourth event of the season, made some solid passes to get his way into the 16-car qualified field. However, Todd got off of the line first and continued to drive away from Wurtzel scoring his first 2016 Countdown round win. Todd and the SealMaster team did not end there. They exacted a little revenge on the driver that took them out just one week ago: Pat Dakin. Todd's SealMaster Toyota Top Fuel dragster ran 3.798, which was enough to get around Dakin's 3.827. That sent Todd to his seventh semi-final or better in the last nine events.

Unfortunately for the SealMaster team, the semi-finals are were it ended. Todd had a solid reaction time off of the starting line, but his opponent, Tony Schumacher, steadily pulled away stopping the SealMaster driver from reaching his fifth final round of the season.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 3 (3.750 sec., 321.80 mph)

  • E1: Todd defeated Wurtzel - 3.818 sec., 320.28 mph to 5.595 sec., 119.26 mph
  • E2: Todd defeated Dakin - 3.787 sec., 319.22 mph to 3.827 sec., 316.90 mph
  • E3: Todd defeated by Schumacher - 3.802 sec., 326.71 mph to 3.757 sec., 326.71 mph

Quotable: "We were hoping to rebound with a win today but we did gain some ground on the top spot with this SealMaster Toyota team. The guys are working hard and are focused. We will go home for a couple days and plan to run hard at Maple Grove."

Point Standings: Seventh (-106); trails sixth-place Steve Torrence by nine points, leads eighth-place Richie Crampton by 25 points

Doug Kalitta

Kalitta closes on points lead

Race Recap: Kalitta returned to Gateway sporting new colors as the traditionally red and white Mac Tools dragster turned to the yellow and black DEWALT FLEXVOLT machine for the next two races.

Kalitta was stellar in qualifying. He earned six bonus points throughout the weekend and started fourth overall with his 3.752 second pass which he ran in Friday evening's session. However, the DEWALT FLEXVOLT dragster was consistent in the heat of Saturday as well earning bonus points in each session.

The fourth qualifying spot meant Kalitta would draw the 13th seeded Terry McMillen and the DEWALT FLEXVOLT team was ready. The Jim Oberhofer tune-up gave Kalitta low elapsed time of round one and reset his own top speed of the weekend with their 328.22mph effort.

A dropped cylinder meant Kalitta's day would end in round two, but Kalitta closed the Brown's points lead to just 13 points heading into the third race of the NHRA Countdown for the Championship.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 4 (3.752 sec., 325.92 mph)

  • E1: Kalitta defeated McMillen - 3.751 sec., 328.22 mph to 6.426 sec., 105.64 mph (328.22 was Top Speed on the weekend)
  • E2: Kalitta defeated by Langdon - 3.861 sec., 310.91 mph to 3.782 sec., 322.27 mph

Quotable: “It's disappointing to go out in the second round because we thought the DEWALT FLEXVOLT Toyota was capable of winning today. We were very solid in qualifying and, in the end, we gained some decent points today and only 13 out of the lead heading into Reading. Maple Grove qualifying starts in five days and that's where our focus needs to be."

Point Standings: Second (-13); trails first-place Antron Brown by 13 points, leads third-place Tony Schumacher by 31 point

Del Worsham

Worsham suffers his first opening round defeat since July

Race Recap: Worsham came into St. Louis as the defending race winner and looking for his fourth Gateway win. The DHL team, led by Jon Oberhofer and Nicky Boninfante, were strong off of the trailer. The DHL Toyota Camry ran a 3.970 second pass in the first qualifying pass, earning two bonus points. He added two more bonus points and qualified solidly in the top half of the field. Worsham's reward: John Force.

Worsham and Force were the seventh pair to see the drag strip. The driver of the DHL Toyota Camry left the line first, but Force drove around him by the finish line to end Worsham's streak of six straight semi-final finishes of better.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 7 (3.929 sec., 324.75 mph)

  • E1: Worsham defeated by J. Force - 3.989 sec., 320.28 mph to 3.958 sec., 327.43 mph

Quotable: "Tough day for this DHL Toyota team. We had a solid pass, but just got out run. To lose in the first round is not fun. We are down, but we know we still have a shot. Reading is always fast. We will head there and plan to rebound."

Point Standings: Fifth (-84); trails with fourth-place John Force by 10 points, leads sixth place Matt Hagan by 12 points

Alexis DeJoria

Early exit for DeJoria, Patrón team

Race Recap: The second of three straight races for DeJoria saw a Saturday celebration as the team celebrated her birthday. On the race track, DeJoria just missed qualifying in the top half. Her Patrón-backed Toyota Camry Funny Car was a part of the last pair to see the race track in the Funny Car class with her opponent, Tommy Johnson Jr. DeJoria ran a solid 3.985, but Johnson Jr. ran his quickest pass of the weekend to defeat the Countdown driver in round one.

Statistics:
Qualified: No. 9 (3.945 sec., 323.19 mph)

  • E1: DeJoria defeated Johnson Jr. - 3.985 sec., 321.65 mph to 3.940 sec., 323.35 mph
